Whether you're a first-time parent to a dribbly baby or buying a gift for a little one, this page aims to give you the full lowdown on drool bibs, what they are and when to buy them.

We're often asked "Help, my child won't stop dribbling. What type of bib is best for a drooling baby?". Let us address this question. We know as parents ourselves how stressful it can be if you are lucky enough to have a little one that likes to dribble (and blow raspberries in our case!). There is a constant need to monitor how damp his or her clothes are and have to change them every few hours. This can be worrisome and time-consuming. If this is the case for you please keep reading. For a dribbling baby our choice would definitely be an absorbent bandana bib.

What are bandana bibs?

A bandana bib is a triangular, double-layered bib with a row of nickel-free popper buttons on each end.  As is the case with Totsi bibs the top layer is absorbent 100% GOTS certified cotton specifically tailored to absorb drool, reflux, and burps. The underlayer which touches your baby's neck and chest area is made of polyester fleece to ensure that it is soft and comfortable around your little one's neck.

What are the benefits of this type of baby bib to me and my little one?

The primary benefit of this type of bib is that it will absorb a day's worth of dribble. This means they will not dampen their clothing and sensitive skin, and you will not need to constantly change their clothing. Your baby will stay dry. Furthermore, should you decide it is time for a fresh bib, taking off and applying this bib to your baby's neck is a very quick, simple, and efficient process. Simply unpop the popper buttons and you are set.

A secondary aesthetic benefit is that these types of bibs are perfect accessories to match your little one's outfit or show his or her interests and personality. They come in lots of lovely patterns for example floral, wildlife, elephants and even plain colours. Many of people love the plain colours as they can be the perfect accessory to colour code with.

How many bibs will we need?

For a super dribbly baby (a dribble monster as we call them) or a teething baby, we would recommend you put a side 2 a day.

Can I reuse a bandana bib?

Yes of course. Totsi dribble bibs can be machine washed at a maximum of 30 degrees Celcius, or hand-washed. Simply wash and hang to dry. You can read detailed washing instructions on this page.

Great dribble bibs we would recommend

We may be a little biased but we think our bibs are the most absorbent on the market. However, we can also happily recommend the following independent brands that also make lovely bibs. Please check them out:

  1. Erkaben Cotton Bandana Bib by AnniePooh. A great Irish company that makes some fab bibs from muslin cotton.

  2. Fynn Jackson Brilliant independent South African boutique.
  3. Totsi - Ourselves of course. We're a homegrown UK business based in Yorkshire with a mission dedicated to providing the most drool-busting bandana bibs on the market.

And how about bibs for teething babies?

Teething is when your little one's teeth first appear, emerging from the gums. Also known as milk teeth! This usually happens around the 6-month mark. This can cause your little one some distress but please don't worry, this phase will be over before you know it.

We would definitley recommend considering a bandana bib for a teething baby just ensure you purchase a double layered bib to help asorb that extra dribble. All of our bibs are double-layered.

Symptoms of a teething child include:

  • Lots of dribbling. More so than usual.
  • Blowing bubbles also known as raspberries. This is to soothe his or her gums.
  • Inflamed gums.
  • Lots of chewing everything in sight.
  • Drool rash if left untreated. Time to buy a teether.
  • His or her mood may be off and they may appear irritable.

The primary symptom of teething is drool and LOTS OF IT. Are bandana bibs good for teething babies? is a question we are often asked. The answer is yes, they can be the perfect solution. We designed our double layered bibs to accommodate even the most dribbly of teething babies.

Tips to soothe a teething baby

It can be distressing seeing your little one unhappy. Here's a carefully collated list of the five most effective measures we've used to soothe a teething baby.

  • Cuddles, soothing words and love. If you are breast feeding you could offer your breast. Sucking releases sleep inducing hormes.
  • Teething toys. These wooden or silicone toys are specifically designed for biting. Please ensure the teething toy meets British Safety standards. You can request this information from your retailer.
  • Cool liquids and water. Ensure the liquid is not ice cold, but cool. This should offer some relief to enflamed gums.
  • Bonjella soothing gel can be an effective treatment. Please consult a doctor before using this. This can be purchased at retailers such as Boots.

If you still need further advice please consult the NHS Childrens Teeth page. We would also recommend reading these articles from BabyCentre which is a great resource for teething and toothcare for babies.

Drool Rash, how to identify and what to do.

What is drool rash?

Drool rash or dribble rash is a common occurence where a teething or dribbly baby will make their mouth and lips sore and red due to to a build of drool. This can cause irritation, red blotches and make your baby unhappy and irritable.

How to combat drool rash

Gently wipe away any dribble or drool from your babies mouth when you see there being a build up. If you use a bandana bib you can use the triangular end to wipe away any dribble just like you would use a soft tissue or muslin cloth. Furthemore I would definitley recommend Aloe Vera gel as a soothing agent, we used this for my first born and it definitley seemed to cool down the areas of irrtation. Please consult your GP before using any treatments.

Finally, please do not worry. The teething and dribbling phase usually ends between 22 and 33 months. Whilst it can be upsetting seeing our little one with discomfort, teething is a completely natural process.
